Make sure your bowl or bucket is placed underneath the drains.
You should see a J-shaped pipe in front of you called a “J-bend”.
The longer section of the “J-bend” will be connected to a vertical section of pipe coming from your sink (called the “tailpiece”), and the shorter end will be connected to a 45-degree elbow (called a “downturn”) that’s attached to a horizontal pipe running into your wall.
Unscrew the slip nuts connecting the J-bend to the pipes on either side. Once both nuts are disconnected, pull the J-bend straight down and off the surrounding pipes. Allow the water to drain into your bucket.
Some drains have an additional section of vertical pipe connecting the tailpiece to the J-bend - called an “extension”. When that’s the case, you will need to unthread an additional slip nut securing the extension to the tailpiece.
