Heat pump clothes dryers do take longer to dry loads than traditional vented or condenser clothes dryers, however with that comes a far greater energy efficiency (meaning reduced running costs) and a more gentle drying process for your clothing.

There are a number of basic maintenance tasks which should regularly be carried out on your heat pump clothes dryer to ensure it continues to run at its optimum. Where these maintenance tasks aren't carried out regularly, your dryers performance will be greatly reduced.

Regular Maintenance Tasks

Water tank (every load)

After each drying load, you should empty your dryer's water storage tank.

If your water tank is full, your heat pump dryer will not operate. Here’s how to remove and empty it:

A warning symbol will appear on the display of your heat pump dryer reminding you to empty the water tank. If the water tank fills up while a program is running, the warning indicator LED will appear on your control panel and the dryer will pause. You should empty the water tank as soon as the warning symbol appears and then press the start button to continue the program.
Your water tank is located on the top left of your dryer, within a removable drawer.
Remove the water tank carefully by pulling it towards you gently. Keep it level to avoid spilling the water.
Empty the water that has collected within the storage tank.

Carefully replace the water tank by sliding it back into the tumble dryer.

Lint Filter (every load)

After each load, you should remove the in-door lint filter and clean removing all residual lint. An empty lint filter will dramatically improve drying performance.

Follow these steps for cleaning the lint filter on your heat pump clothes dryer.

Open the dryer's door. The filter is positioned at the front of the drum, within the door opening and is easily lifted out.
The filter will open out like a book so that the inside can be cleaned. Simply wipe any lint away with a damp cloth or you can use a vacuum cleaner.
If there is a lot of lint build-up you can wash the filter under running water in the reverse direction of the lint build-up.
Make sure the filter is dry when you put it back into your tumble dryer. Wet filters will reduce the drying performance.

Wipe down the door and lint filter housing (every load)

Depending on the load fabric types, you may need to wipe down the glass door surround and the area housing the door lint filter, removing any residual lint.

Drying sensors (every 2-3 months)

Your heat pump dryer has quite a lot of "smarts" built-in to it, including an onboard computer and sensors. You should make sure these sensors are kept clean and free from lint to ensure good drying performance and to avoid extended drying times. Follow these steps to clean your drying sensor:

The drying sensor bars are located behind the lint filter in the front of the door opening (ie. on the drum side of the lint filter housing).
Allow the machine to cool down if it is still hot from being used.
Wipe the metal surfaces of the sensor bars with a soft cloth.
Do not use abrasive cleaning products, you can dampen the cloth with vinegar to clean.
Ensure you have dried the sensor bars with a soft cloth again before using your tumble dryer.
You should aim to clean the drying sensors every two to three months to ensure they function effectively.

Evaporator (every 2-3 months)

Your dryer's evaporator is a critical component used as part of the heat pump drying process and it should be checked and cleaned every 2-3 months to ensure drying performance is not reduced. If you are using your dryer daily, we suggest every 2 months).

Here’s a step-by-step guide to cleaning the evaporator:

The evaporator is housed behind the kick plate at the bottom of the machine, on the left hand side.
Press the kick plate button to open the kick plate.
Remove the evaporator filter which is housed inside a drawer by twisting or unclipping as directed on the machine. The evaporator itself, sits behind the filter and you will able to see it when the filter has been removed.
Use a soft-bristled brush to gently clean the fins of the evaporator by brushing them upwards and downwards.

You can also clean the evaporator by hand provided that you wear protective gloves.

Another option is to use a vacuum cleaner in the same up and down motion to clean the evaporator, providing that it is dry.

Replace the filter drawer in front of the evaporator again and lock it in place by using the clips as directed on your machine.
Close the kick plate cover.
