If one or more gas burners won’t ignite, the most common cause is grime build-up in the burner head or around the ignitor. Follow these steps to resolve the issue.

1. Check Burner Cap Alignment

For proper ignition, the burner heads and caps must be correctly positioned.

Ensure each burner cap is on the correct burner head.
Make sure the burner head is on the correct burner base.
Check that both components are flat and level.

Even a slightly misaligned or tilted burner cap can cause slow, uneven ignition—or prevent the burner from lighting altogether.

2. Clean the Ignitor

Remove the burner head to expose the ignitor.
Locate the small white ignitor with a silver tip next to the burner housing.
Using a toothbrush and a bleach-free cleaner (such as vinegar or a water + baking soda solution), gently scrub around the ignitor base and the ignitor itself to remove grime build-up.
Carefully dry the ignitor with a paper towel.

3. Clean and Dry the Burner

Clean the burner head and cap, removing any food residue or grease build-up.
Use a toothpick, sewing needle, or compressed air to clear any debris from the burner holes.
Ensure all components are completely dry before reassembling.
Reinstall the burner head, cap, and grates, then try lighting the burner again.

4. Check for Moisture in the Burner Housing

With the burner heads removed, clean and dry the burner housing (the recessed area in the cooktop).
Boil-overs can leave residual water inside the burner housing, affecting ignition.
