Portable and industrial batteries under 2 kWh: Manufacturers can self-certify these batteries.

All other batteries: Manufacturers must work with a notified body, which is an organization approved by the EU to evaluate product conformity.

The CE conformity assessment process is required under the EU Battery Regulation, which will come into effect on August 18, 2024. The regulation covers all types of batteries, including lithium batteries, and includes requirements for safety, substance restrictions, technical documentation, labeling, and testing. The regulation also includes new requirements for carbon footprint and recycled content information, which will be phased in over time.
